Reflection: One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish was written by Theodor Seuss Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss in 1960. Dr. Seuss is known for his clever use of repetition and fantastic creatures and this book is as Seuss as it gets. The rhyming word comes at the beginning of a repeated syllable, rather than at the end of the phrase, as in the title, "One Fish, Two Fish, Red, Fish, Blue Fish." The book is about a boy and a girl who have many silly creatures and pets for friends. There are many preschool concepts throughout the book, such as rhyming, colors, counting and opposites. Even though the text is lighthearted, a deeper meaning can be pulled out of the fun, which is, everyone is different and we don't know why, but we have to accept it. One example of this is the lines, "Yes. Some are red. And some are blue. Some are old. And some are new, Some are sad, And some are glad, And some are very, very bad. Why are they sad and glad and bad? I do not know. Go ask your dad." Even if deeper meanings are understood until later in life, this book is a winner with children young and old alike.
