Reflection: What is Peace? is a lift-the-flap book that explains the abstract concept of peace to children.  The book makes a positive statement such as “Peace is giving” and is followed by an opposing statement under the flap about what peace is not, i.e. “Not taking.”  The colorful illustrations have children from different ethnicities interacting in various situations, playing and eating together.  When the book describes what peace is it shows children smiling and getting along, but the “Not” statement under the flap shows children frowning and displaying negative emotions and body language.  On the last pages of the book, it pops-up with a rainbow and has many children of different ethnicities as well as a child in a wheelchair smiling and playing together.  The final statements on the last pages of the book define what peace is, “PEACE is friendship – not hate. PEACE is liking PEACE is loving.”  The back page of the book includes instructions on how to make a Peace Crane and a poster that celebrates Peace.  This book has been translated into twenty different languages with English editions.
