Reflection: Ten Little Fish by Audrey Wood is a simple counting book that attracts children at first sight.  The book is covered with Nemo-like fish, which are computer graphics that look like the movie.  The story starts its countdown with, “Ten Little Fish, swimming in a line. One dives down, and now there are…” and the children all chant, “Nine.”  The couplets continue until the last, One Little Fish.  Then the text reads, “One Little Fish.  What will he do?”  Turn the page and, “Along comes another fish, and that makes…” and the count is back on, so the children think, but after two, the story tells us that one fish is a father and the other is a mother.  The book ends with the couple not counting and the ten fish swim away in a line.  Even though this book is a counting concept book, children love the vivid colors and can revisit the book and pick out all the yellow and green fish, or pick out all the red and purple fish and have even more early concept fun.  This book will work with the 0-4 crowd at whatever stage of learning they are in.  For the babies, they will love the rhythm of the text as you read and then for toddlers, they can touch the fish as they count and the preschooler can expand their experiences by reader prompted questions about numbers, colors, predictions and more.
