Reflection: Don’t Spill the Beans! is a story book that ends with an interesting surprise for the reader.  Throughout the story, Bear goes around telling all his animal friends a secret, keeping the children interested and dying to know just what that secret is.  At the end of the story, the beans are spilt, the cat is out of the bag… and Bear and his friends say “Happy Birthday to you.”  While this story does use rhyming, I think the most important thing it teaches you is that there is multiple ways to say one thing.  Throughout the story, as he tells each of his friends the secret, the author describes him doing it with different words.  For example, he “blurts” the secret to turtle, but he “alerts” raccoon.  All in all, it an adorable story that is a perfect way to set a child up for a birthday surprise.
