Reflection: The Little White Duck was originally a silly song written by Walt Whippo and Bernard Zaritzky that has been turned into a vibrant picture book that children can sing-along to as they turn the pages. The main characters are the duck, frog, bug and snake and children love to make the sounds the animals make as they read and sing along. The book is narrated by a guitar-playing mouse and everyone is happy until the snake comes along to scare off the duck and frog and then eats the bug. At the end, all the characters, plus the mouse take a bow, so that sensitive young children will know it's all just a pretend play and the bug really doesn't get eaten. This book is a great book to play the music and do a picture walk in story time. The children love to watch the pages as they hear the music. I recommend Burl Ives rendition of Little White Duck, however, many artists have recorded the tune such as Danny Kaye and Raffi.
