Reflection: Mrs. McNosh and the Great Big Squash uses slapstick humor and rhyming text to introduce vocabulary, descriptive words, and action verbs.  The book starts with Mrs. McNosh planting a squash, the squash grows at an astonishing rate and causes destruction, flattening the cat, crashing through the clothesline and smashing a fence.  Mrs. McNosh is overwhelmed and slaps, scolds, pinches, and kicks it to try and slow down the squash’s growth but nothing works until “she picked it.”  Then she worries about what to do with the squash but ends up hollowing it out to make it into her house.  The colorful pictures are a perfect depiction of the funny scenes described in the text.  This read-aloud book makes children laugh and begging for it to be read again. The character, Mrs. McNosh also stars in other fun adventures in Mrs. McNosh Hangs Up her Wash and Oh My Gosh, Mrs. McNosh!
