Reflection: Hush Little Baby is Sylvia Long’s rendition of a familiar lullaby and uses sing-
song rhyming to depict special moments shared between a mother and child, “Hush little baby, don’t say a word, Mama’s going to show you a hummingbird.”  The text describes scenes from nature and what the pair does together to prepare for bed.  A small picture on the left page is of the nature scene or of the child’s bedroom as detailed in the first half of the text.  The right side of the page is a large picture that illustrates what the rabbit mother and child are observing or doing together as described in the text.  The ink and watercolor illustrations are vivid colored and detailed, with the pictures showing the pair cuddling and the baby rabbit sitting on the mother’s lap.  The attention to detail in the pictures makes the book realistic and children can relate to the adorable baby rabbit wearing pajamas in his bedroom with carrot curtains.  This book would be a great bedtime story to read/ sing in a soft gentle voice to children as they prepare to go to bed.
