46) Shape by Shape by Suse MacDonald

Bibliographic Citation: MacDonald, Suse. Shape by Shape. Little Simon, 2009. 24 pages. ISBN: 978-1416971474.

Format: Hardcover

Author/Illustrator Sites: http://www.susemacdonald.com

Age Group: Ages 3-4 Years

Annotation: A mystery creature is revealed by a series of cut-out shapes.

Reflection:  Shape by Shape uses a series of cutouts on brightly colored pages to teach the names of different shapes.  The first page of the book asks “Do you know what I am?  I lived a long, long time ago. I had round eyes…” to get kids guessing and shouting out what shape is on the page and ultimately what will be revealed at the end of the book.  The author describes each body part “eyes, teeth, mouth” with a corresponding shape.  The next page on the back of that page states the name of the shape and shows the cutout shapes becoming a face.  The book continues in a fill in the blank format of shape names to become a collage of shapes that is a dinosaur.  The end of the book is a fold-out of a large dinosaur, Brachiosaurus which is phonetically spelled out to teach the correct pronunciation of the animal.  This fun book introduces shapes in a unique way and helps children see how the dinosaur is comprised of many different shapes.
